The Foundation

A Sense of Responsibility

It was his strong sense of responsibility to foster artistic talent and to help preserve education in the humanities in his local area that led Hans-Theo Thormaehlen to establish the foundation in 1998, before his retirement. The founder’s family has been distinguished in

Bad Kreuznach (09/22/2002)
by its involvement in wine growing, sports and education, and also its association with the arts, in particular with the poet Stefan George. The Thormaehlen family’s connections with artists and their own artistic pursuits began to flower in the second half of the nineteenth century in the living quarters of C.F. Eccardt’s monastic winery at 48 Salinenstrasse (today the site of

Kreuznacher Volksbank (09/22/2002)
and the sports hall of the high school by the town wall). Later, the adjoining building, formerly the ‘Luisenschule’ school for young ladies, became the center of the family’s artistic activities, which finally found home in the buildings that were once part of Carl Altenkirch’s wine growing estate at 9 Rheingrafenstrasse.

A Sense of Attachment

Hans-Theo Thormaehlen feels a strong sense of attachment to the town’s high school,

Gymnasium an der Stadtmauer (09/22/2002),
which is a school steeped in tradition. He himself received a classical education at the school and, in 1968, took up a position there, teaching Latin and sports. A further connection to the school arose when the family took over the neighboring property of the ‘Luisenschule’. It is for these reasons that the following are the goals of the foundation, which Hans-Theo established and manages with the help of his youngest son

Frederik
and stepdaughter
Vera Scheidtweiler

To Foster and to Preserve

The foundation aims to foster the intellectual, physical and artistic talents and achievements of young people from the local area. It is intended in particular to provide financial support for high-performing, exemplary pupils who are actively involved in the life of the school in Bad Kreuznach. In addition, the foundation seeks to ensure that the fruits of the intellectual and artistic activities of the extended Thormaehlen family are collected, documented, preserved, and publicized. This includes the work of Prof. Dr. Ludwig Thormaehlen (art historian, sculptor, and patron of young artists); his aunt Alexe Altenkirch (artist, graphic designer and art teacher); his sisters, Bernhild Gieseler-Thormaehlen (dance teacher and choreographer), and Gunhild Friedman-Thormaehlen (artist and graphic designer); Hans-Theo’s eldest son
Karsten,

(communications designer and photographer) (09/22/2002) and niece Dara Friedman-Handforth (film director).

To Support

The foundation also supports artistic and cultural activities in the local area, fosters artists and works connected to this region between the Rhine and the Mosel, and aims to provide a financial basis for showcasing creativity.
